The Cactus Rëndfleesch vum Lëtzebuerger Bauer beef production scheme was set up in 1996 to focus attention on beef and to create a climate of trust between producers and the end consumers.

Working with the scheme’s 150 livestock farmers, we have established a charter of specifications defining each participant’s responsibilities, particularly with regard to animal welfare, food safety, traceability and respect for the environment.

Breeders are therefore obliged to minimise the impact their work has on the environment and mineral and energy audits are produced annually which compare everything that goes in and everything comes out of each farm.

In order to guarantee animal welfare, the breeders are committed to meeting several stringent criteria: the animals’ feed is very strictly controlled, the animals live in herds under natural conditions, veal calves are raised with their mother and all animals have sufficient space to grow and develop as they should. Stress or suffering is also prohibited throughout the animals’ entire lifetime and this also applies to when they are being loaded onto lorries and transported to the abattoir.

To provide you with absolute traceability, which goes hand in hand with food safety, at any time each animal can be individually traced from its farm to our store.

Finally, it should be noted that the breeders who belong to the Cactus Rëndfleesch vum Lëtzebuerger Bauer scheme receive a fair price which is being continually adjusted to reflect their variable production costs. For their part, the breeders undertake to breed the maximum number of top-quality cattle, while always following the criteria laid down by the specifications.

I’ve discovered premium beef

In addition to our labelled beef, we can now offer you a range of finest beef cuts under the PREMIUM label. This beef comes from the same breeders who are affiliated to the Cactus label, and is selected from their best heifers (young cows which have not yet had any calves) and mostly from either Limousin or Charolais cattle. This heifer meat is dry-aged for 21 days – producing rib of beef, sirloin, cuts for grilling. An extremely tender meat with a uniquely delicious taste.

Where can I find it?
You’ll find this meat in green packs with the special PREMIUM label. It’s available from self-service meat counters in five supermarkets: Cactus La Belle Etoile, Bascharage, Bereldange, Ingeldorf and Kayl.

In 2018, Cactus launched its “made in Luxembourg” chicken label.

Following the example of the Cactus beef label, the emphasis with this label is also on quality, animal welfare, traceability and a fair price for the producers, in order to make poultry sustainable in the Grand Duchy over the long term.

The label is based on a set of specifications which stipulate quality control at every level of production. With five poultry farmers, the production is small-scale, local and quality is of utmost importance.

Cactus’ master butchers prepare plats du jour for our ultra-fresh Cactus Hausgemaacht logo. Produced daily in our production facilities in Bertrange, these hand-prepared dishes can be heated in the micro-wave and are available from the self-service meat counters in all Cactus stores. The Cactus Hausgemaacht range offers a very wide choice of simple brasserie-style dishes which change with the seasons and perfectly complement the “ De Schnékert ” range of more sophisticated ready-made dishes.
